    Default Mind at ease!

    Hey Guys

Actually posting on my girlfriends behalf - Just to get some guidence on the use of protein, after getting some PhD Diet Whey protein, and fat loss.

I've taken protein shakes for some time and my girlfriend as slowly shown more interest in taking some, after recent gossip articles about celebs using it a diet tool and that it benefits hair and nails!!! !

She wants to tone/tighten up - But her main concern was that she might end up like Arnie, but I've assured her that, that would require mega calories, mega weights and a cocktail of other supplements (creatine.. etc.. ;-)

She is crazy fit and does do a lot of Fizz during the week...
Swim/gym/run 2/3 times a week in the morning.
Stupidly hard army based training (BMF) 3/4 times a week in the evening.
Plus running and mega miles cycling at the weekend.

Also diet is pretty good, complex carbs, lots of veg, chicken/fish, no/limited stat fats.

So basically asking your guys opinion on when best to take the shake!?!

    I'm thinking 1 scoop (30g):-

3 times a day for BMF days - Morning, afternoon, after training.
3 times a day for Morning (run/gym/swim) and BMF days - Morning (after work out), afternoon, after training in the evening.
Twice for gym only - after the gym and in the evening.
Twice for no exercise day - Breakie and evening.

She's worried about taking it too much - Is there any side effects/concerns? And if its more suited as a meal replacement?

I kinda figure that your body will flush (pee) out protein if your taking too much and that a 30g scoop is pretty much half a typical portion, so there's no need to worry about excess?

    Cheers for any feed back/opinions

    Hey there.
Firstly, there are no side effects or concerns for your girlfriend taking a whey supplement. Your girlfriend seems very active so a supplement will be ideal and will not turn her into Arnie. For her to build muscle, she would need to be in a calorie surplus and with all that cardio, I doubt she is. As your girlfriend tones up, she may start to look more muscular but that is simply because her fat % will be reducing and her muscles will become more exposed.

Taking a protein supplement, is exactly that, a supplement to her diet, which you say is pretty good. My advice would be for your girlfriend to spread her meals over the day, so she is consuming protein, clean carbs and essential fats, every 3 hours.

I would advice a protein supplement approx 30 to 45 minutes pre-workout and within 30 minutes post-workout. I would then advice taking another protein shake with her breakfast.

The extra protein will improve performance and aid recovery!

hi. i hear that a lot where women think if they had a protein shake or used weights they would become a disgusting mass of muscle. i literally would give me right arm for that to be true. lol. jsut show her a picture of me and say hes been tkaing protein shakes every day for years and hes not arnie lol.

no in all seriousness the amount of diet whey needed completely depends on her diet. she needs to be intaking small amounts every 2-3 hours. mainly protein based but also containing small amounts of low GI carbs (to fuel her intense workouts) and some essential fats.

there is no need to worry about too much protein and as long as shes not having a stupid amount she wouldnt notice any difference.

    Brilliant, thanks guys -

So the trick is to eat less more often? Rather than 3 big main meals?
And by taking in protein, around every 3 hours, doesn't particually mean having a shake every 3 hours - Chicken/eggs will be fine?

    Sounds simples
